Supah Toosday It is finally here, so prepare to get all your senses hammered by the media coverage, specially if you’re a fan of The Situation Room. I dunno why but it’s hard for me not to do the Strong Bad Burninator’s voice every time I say “The Situation Room”. There I did it again.

See what I just did there with the title, you know, because of last week’s Internet Blackout in the Middle East sucked? and then there is this great design piece also called Blackout created by Paul Sych for Lush Magazine so… bahh nevermind. Go check Paul’s portfolio, you’ll find great stuff.

ArtCulture.com made a roundup of some of 2007’s best works of digital artistry. You can find a great collection of Vector, 3D, and Digital Paint brushing art from several artists. Very useful to find some inspiration… or just to envy their talent. My favorite is definitively Jerico Santander’s Own World.

Apple's Tipping Point

I’ve been thinking a lot on Design lately; specifically what it means to me, what it means to my clients and what other colleagues think about it.

It all started last week after my brother shared this quote with me:

Web Development can be really frustrating because customer expectations are hard to define due to the subjective nature of Art

After 11 years of working on this field I couldn’t agree more, yet everyday I convince myself that it can’t be like this forever, that at one point people will understand that like all forms of design, visual design is about problem solving, not about personal preference or unsupported opinion. As developers we are both part of the problem and part of the solution, the sooner we understand that, the sooner we’ll be able to asume our responsibility of educating clients and users.

Australian Open just got something new, borrowed and blue Speaking of tennis, The Australian Open, the first of the four Grand Slams held each year, started on Monday in Melbourne, although this year it looks a lot different from the previous editions. Here’s why.

Veerle's Photoshop Tennis Match Serve

First, there was Kim. Then Justin came along. Now it’s Veerle’s turn! Not only she has a great taste on home decor and color palettes, it turns out the amazingly talented Belgian designer can also kick your behind in Photoshop Tennis using only his left hand AND while watching an ALIAS episode at the same time.

On Friday afternoon, she played a very funny match against her long time friend Cindy Li and according to the spectators, she came victorious. In the meantime, the other (who by the way look a lot like Veerle on this photo) #1 Belgian Tennis Player claim her 40th Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title.

In other Belgian Design News, the Award Wining Agency Group 94 has launched their redesigned website. While definitively not as accessible as a Standard CSS/XHTML layout, their new Flash website is one of the most original concepts I’ve seen lately. Kuddos!

From Good To Great Web Design in 25 LinksUnless you’ve been living under a very large rock, you probably know this is that time of the year were everyone feels obligated to provide advice about what’s good, what’s not and what’s just plain stupid

NFL Playoffs For any big Football Fan, January has a very special meaning attached to it. Is that time of the year again when you start developing bonds with your TV and your Fridge, more than in any other time of the year.

It’s even more special if you happen to be a Design Junkie, not only because the next 5 weeks will be filled with the Cream of the Crop in Advertising, but also because it’s time for the National Font League Playoffs.

Pentagram is already selling (like hot buns that is) their Classic Typographic 2008 Calendar which was designed using twelve typefaces designed by typographer Matthew Carter including Walker (originally designed in 1995 for the Walker Art Center), Snell Roundhand (a 1966 revival of 17th century English writing master Charles Snell) and Galliard (a 1978 anthology of Roman and Italian styles of French punch-cutter Robert Granjon). Hinrichs explains:

I wanted to bring a new awareness of typographic design through this calendar

3rd Floor

The only way this calendar would look any cooler is if instead of hanging it on your walls you get a Mexican wrestler to walk around the office with it. I know we tried that in our Albuquerque offices but it didn’t work out cause Kenny believed it was Jack Black and tried to remove his mask all the time. Kenny that is.

The wrestler is still in our offices and he now goes by the name of Miguel.
