It turns out, I’m not a creative designer. There, I said it!

Last month I was confronted with this reality over lunch at a NMAF event my dear friend Kenny invited to go. Every month, the NMAF organizes a Monthly Luncheon Event at the Embassy Suites @ ABQ. These monthly lunch/talks are a great opportunity to invite people from the industry to come over to Albuquerque and share their insights. Last September, the nice people at NMAF invited Karl Becker, the President and Founder of Denver-based FL2 to talk about “Traditional and Interactive Agency Partnerships: Why They Often Fail and How They Can Work”.

What a trip that was. I finally got to Asuncion today back from my last journey which by the way, feels like it started in 1987.

Boy, that was long, but looking back it was the coolest trip I ever had! Just to give you an idea, here are some numbers of the past 2 months:

  • 55 Days total
  • 38 Days away from my pregnant wife
  • 6 Airports (ASU, GRU, MIA, DWF, ABQ, JFK)
  • 6 Cities (Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Phoenix, New York City, Miami)
  • 4 Hotels (Westin @ Vegas, Hyatt @ Phoenix, The Hudson @ NYC, The President @ Miami Beach)
  • 4 Client Meetings (including a Silverback’d usability test with 10 subjects)
  • 4 Lost (and recovered) pieces of baggage=
  • 2 Miamis (Miami, AZ & Miami, FL. Both equally gangsta-er)
  • 2 Ikeas (Phoenix, AZ & Sunrise, FL)
  • 1 Tattoo (My first ink)
  • 1 Car accident caught on film (a Cab in NYC just in front of me, I promise to post the pics later on)
  • 1 Concert (Counting Crows & Maroon 5 at the Albuquerque Pavilion)
  • 1 Celebrity spotted in the wild (David Copperfield @ the MGM lobby 2AM)

Now all I have to do is tackle my Inbox (quick apologize to all my friends and clients for not being able to set up an Auto-Responder in time) and get back on track with all the work and upcoming projects in the next few weeks. All I can say is: THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME.

Good Morning from kwest on Vimeo.

Kanye West’s latest (super awesome) video “Good Morning” by the even awesomer Takashi Murakami. Reminds me of that time were Daft Punk used to do japanese-animated-looking videos.

“And you can take that to the bank” Poster spotted in the wild

Joshua Holnagel just sent me this great picture of the poster at the Graphic Arts class where he teaches. Thank you so much Joshua! I feel incredibly honored and I appreciate your taking the time to send this to me. Ok, back to work.

Digital to Analog to Digital

That’s it. I’m canceling my Basecamp account. Why would I need it anyway if instead, the client prefers to just print the website on a paper, write the revision on it, scan it and then send it over email.

Tokio Rogue

With its ever present LCD interface, the time can be read at a glance but can be further illuminated with sci-fi green LEDs at the touch of a button, bringing the display to life like a glowing radar screen.

Ok so… who can lend me $ 155 bucks so I can fulfill this urging desire of mine.

Persistence

So what can Michael Phelps, Seth Godin and this Tree teach you? To be persistent. To not quit. To adapt. To evolve and yet keep going.

Persistence isn’t using the same tactics over and over. That’s just annoying

Persistence is having the same goal over and over
- Seth Godin

Sure you could trade all the stress of running your own company and having to deal with clients for the temporary security and comfort of getting a job and an average “secure” salary, but I believe that people who are willing to make that trade, deserve neither.

I don’t think there is anything more important in today’s world than to be persistent and keep moving forward. Your clients, employees and the economy will thank you for it. Take my word for it.

Michael phelps before and after

Believe it or not, the pale kid sitting on his speedos is no other than the greatest Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps. Isn’t amazing what 8,000 to 10,000 calories a day can do to your body? And no, your eyes are not lying to you, the picture on the right does look like a Photoshop Disaster.
